IFTravels: YOGYAKARTA 29 Jan - 2 Feb 2017 (DAY 2 - GEREJA AYAM & MERAPI)

Assalamualaikum,

Continuation from DAY 2 - BOROBUDUR's post.

Basically, we spent maybe less than 2 hours in Borobudur. Heads up, the exit to the parking lot is sooo long. You have to pass rows and rows of souvenir shops first before you're able to see food stalls and parking. We ate at one of the food stall before heading out to the Chicken Church.

Gereja Ayam, or in English, the Chicken Church; is named as such because of its shape. But in reality, the person who built it actually meant it to look like a dove. He had a vision to build a prayer house that is open to all religion and also to be a center for charitable causes. However, because of money constraints due to the costs, the construction was halted and thus the building was left abandoned. The official name for the center is actually Rumah Doa Bukit Rhema (Bukit Rhema's Prayer House), fitting to its purpose as a multi-faith prayer house. But because the person who inspired to build this place is a Christian, locals around implied it as a church.

When the film AADC2 featured this building in it, the prayer house became much popular and visited by many youngsters. It started a hype and since then, the building reopened and construction work began again. The entry here is 5k rupiah per person (local price). You have to do a little bit of trekking and hiking here. Less than 500m but the last 100m hike is steep. We were brought to the underground floor first and was able to see many prayer rooms and meditation rooms. There is even a proper musollah inside. Then, we went up to crown. The view is incredible, you can see the top of Borobudur from here. Punthuk Setumbu is actually behind the tail of the chicken/dove.

Crossing a traditional bridge before the trekking starts.

The start of trekking before the steep hike.

The main hall inside Rumah Doa Bukit Rhema

On the spot where Cinta chose "Traveling" over "Liburan" with Rangga.

After our time at Bukit Rhema, we went to Merapi Jeep Tour. It depends on you whether you want to do the tour or not. We had a lot of time left, so decided impromptu to go on a jeep tour. The price is 350k rupiah per jeep and each jeep may carry up to 4 passengers + a driver. Payable by cash only here. The jeep tour has their own trail, it was quite extreme and enjoyable. But unfortunately for us, when we got close to the merapi, the fog covered it. We couldn't see Merapi up close. One thing to make sure when going for the Merapi tour, the sky is clear and no signs of rain.

First stop is the Sisa Hartaku museum. This house was ruined by Merapi and its owner, Bapak Riyanto, dedicated this house and its ruined items as well as skeletons of animals (they're real!) as a place in reminder of Merapi's events. When visiting this place, your driver will be your guide so just ask him anything and he will gladly tell you everything you need to know.

This bunker was ruined during 2006 eruption and there were 2 people who were working during that time. The men went inside the bunker to escape the eruption but got trapped because of the ashes and heat, eventually died.

This poetry in Javanese means,
"Merapi's message: I am one who never gives up nor am I one who likes to lose. But a promise is a promise, the time will come and I apologize if there are those that are destroyed, drowned, swept away and submerged because they obstruct the road that I go through"

We went back to our hotel after Merapi to enjoy our hotel while it's still daylight. We asked Agung to pick us up at night for dinner and for some ole-ole shopping.

So peaceful that you want to do yoga.

Too bad we didn't bring swimsuit to enjoy the pool.

And that's our DAY 2. Seemed full but actually quite relaxing. The day here starts early. Subuh is at 415 AM and at 6 PM, it's already near Maghrib. Ultimately it depends on how you want to go about your day. Our Day 1 & 2 were quite relaxing, even Day 3 was not bad. Since it was just two of us, it felt as if we're on honeymoon haha.
